Located in Prince George’s County, Maryland, Westphalia Town Center consists of 479 acres and combines high-density residential and mixed-use development at its core with lower-density residential outside the core. The two will be linked by a series of green spaces and parks. Traffic analyses were needed for zoning to allow for this dense urban project and a new interchange was necessary along MD 4 at MD 223 to not only serve the project and existing traffic, but also limit or prohibit traffic from cutting through adjoining neighborhoods. The Traffic Group designed a new multi-leg roundabout for the northern end of the interchange, eliminating signals at the interchange and allowing for signalized access into the retail development for the project. The result: enhanced level of service and millions of dollars in reduced costs to the client.
