Reconfigure South Parking (Pentagon)

The 2001 terrorist attack on the Pentagon necessitated changes to traffic patterns around the Department of Defense Headquarters to protect the structure from potential threats. The Traffic Group prepared a full Traffic Analysis and Conceptual Design Plan for the redevelopment of the South Parking Area at the Pentagon, including potential transportation alternatives to improve pedestrian safety and maximize traffic flow within the constrained site.

To assess existing conditions, The Traffic Group undertook extensive data collection during peak periods on typical weekdays as well as site observations to analyze queueing and other potential traffic concerns. A comprehensive Vissim model was prepared to provide a clear picture for stakeholders of existing operational issues during the peak periods.

In consultation with the Washington Headquarters Services (WHS) staff, The Traffic Group developed a Preferred Alternative to satisfy design objectives. Construction of the plan is underway as a Design-Build project and The Traffic Group remains involved in the construction process and has prepared traffic signal design plans for MOT and final phases, signing plans, and pavement marking plans.
